10.7 on an external drive?

i have no real desire upgrade lion because don't want os x getting more ios-ish. want use ibooks author. think googling work, want sanity check:

have external drive connected time machine backs to. if partition drive, should able install 10.7 on 1 partition , have bootable , run ibooks author there, while still using other partition backups, right? (the hard drive has tons of space, it's twice size of internal hard drive.)

how big lion partition need be? , thre wine-like way without having reboot in , out of lion?

 

sure, it'll work. system , lib 20 gigs, 12 apps gives 32 gb tot. 60gb partition should trick. hundred give room grow. consider size of itunes library, , whether you'll want move before partition.
