Internet sharing issues

hi there,

want share internet connection mac ipad 2 via wi-fi.
have gone sharing part of system preferences , turned on etc cannot find network on ipad when type in name manually. have tried many times can never see network.

on college network shouldn't issue other people have got sharing work.

if helps ipad has recent software , mac running 10.6.8.
