the 18-55 kit lens came 550d got old in 2 days. ugh.
i've been looking better glass use do-it-all everyday lens. have budget of $1000. i'll doing indoor events including sports outdoor nature shots , vacation photos. purpose have couple candidates.
ef-s 17-55mm f/2.8 usm
ef-s 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 usm (plus 85mm f/1.8)
ef 24-105mm f/4l usm
ef 24-70mm f/2.8l usm
have top-notch image quality. differences between them mild i'm not concerned iq in dilemma anymore.
first 2 choices cheaper ones, 15-85mm being ~$200 cheaper 17-55mm. fast aperture of 17-55mm, feel limited comparatively small zoom range isn't of improvement 18-55mm. also, 15-85mm has 4-stop while 17-55mm older 3-stop version. i'm worried 17-55mm have seal problems many people having. huge disadvantage 15-85mm variable slow aperture hinders lowlight performance.
prime lens combo comes play. being faster zoom lens, 85mm prime should add lowlight capabilities setup, feel might hindered lack of and/or zoom prime, , switching lenses might of hassle fast-paced events sports.
considered better lenses perhaps bit out of range. obvious choice venerable 24-70mm. fast aperture perfect focal length! problem might miss of wide angles, weighs more camera, , lacks is. plus, it's $1200 used (but excellent investment!).
or go 24-105mm f/4l usm. albeit slower 17-55mm , 24-70mm, it's still faster 15-85mm @ focal lengths, has greater reach on crop body, etc. again, might miss wide angles , weighs lot. it's on upper end of cost spectrum. feel f/4 might not enough indoor sports photography.
in event someday end getting full-frame camera, guess ef lenses more worthy investment, i'm not concerned right now.
have put thought dilemma still can't decide on setup go with! please give me advice on lens go for? thanks!
you can't go wrong of these lenses; they're great. i'll surprised if 15-85 has full stop advantage because on 17-55 works beautifully, regardless, how shoot subjects don't move? won't moving subjects, of course.
prefer avoid lenses variable apertures, if shoot in semi-auto modes, make little difference you. in av or tv, camera compensate automatically aperture change necessitated focal length choose. if shoot in m mode, little annoying. suppose decision depends on shooting style.
focal length differences, think miss wide end if go lens starts @ 24mm. sure, lenses transfer on full-frame camera, ef-s lenses considering hold value well--it's piece of cake sell lenses , move on whatever need when time comes move full-frame.
