firewire HD dock

hi all,
got voyager q hd dock. fiancé's macbook met demise d hopes have boot off hd old mb.on older mbp both running 10.7.2. have voyager q connected via firewire 800. set permissions of drive has access , checked ignore ownership of drive ( able mount ). when start machine , hold down option key, mbp's internal drive visible choice boot off of.

suggestions?

i have voyager q , has same problem 2007-vintage imac.

recent firewire 800 drives (at least voyager q sata docking stations) boot newer macs via firewire, -not- boot older macs (by "older" mean few years older).

has changed in past couple of years regarding [modern] firewire interfaces , booting older macs. not sure whether has hardware, or software.

wondering, have newer mac try voyager dock on, released within 2010-11? if so, difference?

"workaround" problem boot usb, rather firewire. yes, slower. works -- trying boot firewire not.
