3TB seagate external, secure erase failing

i have setup below, 3tb seagate connected through fw800. weird errors happened during backup of pc, i've decided return , use 2.5" drives have instead. on 2 ocassions erase has failed, both 1 pass through disk utility on 10.7.3.

there other options besides this? i've searched on oct 2011 thread, there no solution.

 

you can full format of device, overwrite sectors on drive. there's software programs out there fill drive random junk, although that's overkill today's harddrives. pack information densely once overwrite it's gone good.

top of line forensics lab might able extract data drive that's been overwritten once, or maybe few times, @ enormous expense it's unlikely cause concern whatsoever. if have top secret infos nobody must under circumstances paws on ever, suggest take hammer drive instead , buy new one.*

paranoia never thing.
