hey, everyone,
i've had 2.66 ghz 13" mbp mid 2010 model 1 year 9 months , yesterday when unplugged computer (after having been plugged in night), turned off. couldn't turn on without being plugged in.
basically, battery dead. battery status not charging , replace now.
have had battery problems machine beginning turn off @ 0% battery rather going safe sleep mode.
had noticed on time battery health had gotten down 80%, seemed normal me given use every day business. last week still able run hours @ time off of ac power. istat reports 0% health.
called apple, since have applecare, , asked me cycle count, high @ 1,396. that high. , use computer lot. don't think it's technically possible count high given used computer plugged in of time.
anyhow, if count high, apple's web-site says after 1,000 cycles battery still retain 80% of original charge. tier 2 specialist spoke said battery not covered after 1,000 cycles.
can understand capacity of battery going down on time, have experience speak whether it's normal go working off battery hours @ time @ 80% health not working @ , 0% health overnight?
computer runs hot--usually around 200 f--and fans @ 6200 rpm, wonder whether heat hurt battery. in fact, computer has lot of problems, since use work every day, have never sent in replaced. i've replaced hard drive , memory myself when failed because preferred paying out of pocket being without week. plus dvd drive has disc in won't come out--the disc ever put in it, actually. i've put because it's easier trying find loaner computer, apple doesn't offer fee.
took apple authorized service provider today (my closest apple store far away), , place bit sketchy. they're charging me $174 new battery though it's $129 through apple. didn't know have install not void warranty (which real problem thisi don't care if battery internal or not, wish sell off shelf install myself). going have pay them install don't think know how because somehow doesn't void warranty, whereas me following ifixit guide would.
sorry rantit's been frustrating.
if has heard heat causing or if knows if normal progression "consumed" battery helpful when deal apple later on.
with many cycles, it's not unusual battery die. doesn't sound heat issue. don't see why charge more advertised price replace battery, however. should answer most, if not all, of battery questions:
mac not overheating, shouldn't running hot under normal load. when back, if fans still high, try resetting smc. if temps still high, launch activity monitor , change "my processes" @ top "all processes", click on cpu column heading once or twice, arrow points downward (highest values on top). see may consuming system resources.
intel processors used in macs designed automatically shut down prevent damage if overheat. cpu tjmax = 105c, gpu tjmax = 100c on i3, i5, i7 processors. (source: intel) if you're not using it, istat pro give accurate readings of temps , fan speeds, among other things.
unless there rare defect in mac, temps within normal operating range, considering workload being put on it. websites flash content, games , other multimedia apps put higher demand on cpu/gpu, generating more heat. normal. if you're putting high demands on system, such gaming or other multimedia tasks, expect temps rise , fans spin accordingly. it's mac doing job maintain temps within normal range.
quite normal mac become extremely hot touch during intensive operations. aluminum body transfers heat more other materials used in computer casings, feel heat more. doesn't indicate it's overheating , not harm computer hot touch.
fans on when mac on, spinning @ minimum of 2000 rpm (for mbps) or 1800 rpm (for mbas, mbs , minis). imacs have 3 fans minimum speeds in 800-1200 range. spin faster needed keep temps @ safe level. if they're spinning without increased heat, try resetting smc. (pram/nvram has nothing these issues, resetting not help.)
intake , exhaust vents in of computer near hinge on mac notebooks. imac vent slot on near top of computer. make sure vents remain unblocked allow computer perform @ best.
learn fans in mac

- find flash version , make sure it's latest version available.
- install clicktoflash (safari), flashblock (firefox) or flashblock (chrome) control flash content plays on websites.
