hello all,
have read numerous threads , opinions here have been helpful in upgrade process - sharing great information.
upgrading wifes almost-brand-new mbp, ordered in dec 2011 , have had 3 weeks, has not installed apps or migrated info onto waiting new ssd arrive (alaska - shipping companies lie delivery time if recognize part of us!)
being our first foray newest ssds (i had 1 last year 1st gen one, convinced me upgrade on 4 of our machines now), ordered 1 crucial m4 , 2 samsung 830s, 64gb using system drive only.
planning on keeping 500gb seagate momentus came stock mbp secondary internal storage until purchase better 1 in month or two. (i commercial fisherman have limited time @ home these fun projects , leaving tomorrow again).
have owc data doubler replacing superdrive, raises couple of questions in mind:
1) performance reasons, should 1 drive in location (i.e. ssd in original hdd slot , stock hd in optical slot?) system profiler shows both slots have 6gbps connectivity capability altho superdrive in place negotiaited speed lower.
installing ssd optibay lead boot issues? appears read should work fine, confirmation. in addition, plan on partitioning stock hdd (seagate momentus 500gb) 1 storage partition of ~400-450 gb , 1 backup os partition of rest of space.
2) durability reasons, should 1 drive in location? i.e. stock hd location *really* have better physical shock protection? have read conflicting reports/opinions on whether optical slot supports sms or not, , data doubler seems enough made, although lacks provision mild shock protection rigid aluminum frame.
also, seagate comes stock has allegedly outstanding durability history on own , (apparently, fwiw) has reputation sturdy laptop drive. factor physical protection , slot should mount in?
3) future upgrading: plan on replacing stock hdd @ point in near future, better install datadoubler avoid unnecessary repetitive fiddling stock hd location, screws, cables, etc? while comfortable replacing components, prefer dislodge them few times possible on lifespan each iteration of remove/replace has possibility of breakage, cracking tiny plastic connector, or other minor accident can happen careful of hands.
chose samsung 830 machine btw, thinking reliability fact runs encryption work security purposes , understanding samsung 1 of better performing drives regards encryption, i.e. non-compressible data.
running stock osx full disk encryption, affect ssd's performance / lifespan?
use typical office , light home apps, such spreadsheets (but not huge ones), word docs, etc, , has deecent size iphoto library , itunes libaray stored on stock hdd.
seems me biggest question performance wise, there difference in installation location ssd?
, second biggest question encryption affect ssd in serious way?
thank input , said top, appreciate forum , valuable advice shared here.
(just by, there way support forum such through purchasing products sort of affiliate/referring website program?)
regards,
scott crabber
