Does Verizon LTE icon only show up after subscribing?

i've got verizon version of new ipad, lte enabled in settings, , both house , workplace deep within lte service area according verizon's website, should have strong lte coverage.

when i'm not on wifi, ipad shows verizon 3g (4 bars) in both places. haven't subscribed plan yet though, i'm wondering if lte badge shows after setting data plan?

i'd hate sign find out i'm stuck on 3g though area supposed lte.

 

you need plan show lte.
