i trying test 88/24 audio file, realized early-2009 mac mini doesn't offer 1 of audio output options, while 2011 mbp does.
so, since mini hooked onkyo via (relatively long) blue jeans cable optical cable (and running fabulously), decided i'd unhook , plug mbp test.
nothing--no sound, no response receiver.
started thinking mbp's optical out broken (i've never tried before), did bunch of testing:
hooked mini, audio set 48/16 or 48/24, works fine.
hooked mbp or imac (i drug on test), no sound, audio set identically, , playing same file. optical outputs doing something, because if disconnected toslink cable 3.5mm adapter, see red light coming out of port, , light went away when sound "sleeping" when pulled out. doing something.
tried crappy, ancient, 12-foot-long radioshack cable had laying around... , worked properly. both imac , mbp (couldn't quite reach mini, , didn't want extract closet test).
now, there's different chipset in mini compared other two, newer macs, confess being moderately shocked decent-quality cable has worked 2 years fails when hooked newer mac (only newer in case of late-2009 imac).
there i'm missing here, or cable of marginal length , mini has stronger optical transmitter?
