Air in Clamshell Mode with Thunderbolt Display

contemplating setup , curious know if similar setup can describe how air manages desktop space when using 27 thunderbolt display versus air's 13" or 11" screen?

picturing setup 27" tb display main work mode of time, , can see arranging desktop resolution. happens when unplug thunderbolt , use air alone? arrangement of desktop same, @ smaller resolution? or move icons around?

 

you can see effect of how os x manages different resolutions changing resolutions on mba in system preferences.

have auto-arrange of icons turned on they're in nice grid. use 11" mba in clamshell mode w/ 27" thunderbolt display. when it's not plugged in, have few rows of icons. when plugged in, have one. works great .
