clamshell mode issue!!!

i got asus vh238h use mbp 13 , having issues getting work in clamshell mode. have monitor hooked using hdmi @ moment. works fine when not in clamshell mode second close lid monitor says no connection found. need please.

using apple wired keyboard , magicmouse, when close lid , move them nothing happens. not sure doing wrong or not doing. i'm getting frustrated!!!

 

this may stoopid question, here goes anyway: have mbp connected ac? clamshell mode not work if magsafe charger isn't plugged-in.
