Can't control volume levels in Menu Bar

it's been driving me crazy! have macbook pro running 10.6.8 , while can't adjust volume in menu bar. can adjust within player or in system preferences window only... shortcut keys (f10, 11 & 12) don't work either, though mapped.

same os. late 2008 model mbp. it's funny because when press f11 , 12, see animation volume never changes...

else?
