Video formats on Ipad 2

okay question- possible take video files have downloaded , save them to/play them on ipad 2? .mkv files or like? remember trying on original ipod video , having trouble, had have them converted apple video file or of sort. i'm sure newbie stuff, couldn't find in advance help!

 

i believe ipad accepts .mov , .m4v video files. convert videos, use handbrake.
