Apple TV 3 and 720p

would there benefit using new apple tv 720p television?
if not, recommend getting refurb 2nd generation instead?

the additional internal oomph of "3" 1080p. if can't display that, , have no plans able in near future, refurb "2" way go assuming discount appropriate. if pricing close "3", might "3".
