iMessage with same apple I'd?

so wife has ipad2 , got new ipad. use same apple id don't have repurchase apps, there way can imessage same log on? sorry if noob qst, it's baby's first ipad

 

if go settings, messages, , receive @ option, gives choice of putting in email.

on iphone, use phone number, on ipad, hotmail email.

both using ipads, not going have phone number on either, changing email address should work???
