How to restore Macbook TM backup to a MBA external drive?

hiya

must common situation couldn't find answer after googling.

white macbook got stolen. ok, it's on cctv, , police on it. have lovely recent time machine full backup. various reasons, i'm not in position buy new laptop right now.

partner has air (non thunderbolt). i'm thinking, can full restore tm external drive linked air?

in theory air boot 500gb external drive, restored tm, 450gb of email, files, photos, imovie work-in-progress etc there.

can work, deal emails etc, have new work backed in right place in tm etc, when she's not using air, , keep me going till sort out replacement mac.

how can this?

couldn't install os x on external drive, make boot drive restore tm backup using migration assistant?
