Macbook Pro OSX 10.6 performance optimization? (Onyx? Monolingual?)

i have older (est. 2008) macbook pro running snow leopard os (10.6.8), 250 gb hard drive, 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo processor, , 4 gb 1067 mhz ddr3 memory.

have external hard drive (wd passport 500gb), keep lot of old stuff, backups, movies/video, etc. have number of apps installed use, if ever... i'll see storing on external hard drive, don't know if can put actual apps on there run off of it... other apps, bulk of internal hard drive space taken music (~50gb) (which need consolidate, suppose usual case)...

in general, know there's lot of hidden stuff , miscellany not identifiable or discerned, how go maintaining optimal health , performance of macbook, clean bit, tighten loose ends? installed onyx, don't know it. installed called monolingual, supposed clear hard drive of unnecessary language packs automatically downloaded along app installs... though don't know if it's necessary or worth having.

advice or info offer me appreciated, lot.

unless within couple of gigabytes of filiing hard drive, having space on internal hard drive not make computer faster. things running count against processor/memory.
