when ipad first introduced there weren't many ipad-specific apps yet available. solution, apple allowed apps designed iphone's smaller screen run on ipad in form of emulation. apps run if on iphone, using fraction of ipad's screen. alternatively, apps run in 2x mode, using technique called pixel doubling fill ipad's screen. however, when in 2x mode, both artwork , text blocky , pixelated.

since original ipad's launch, both iphone , ipod touch has been upgraded high resolution retina displays. while apple use retina graphics apps had been upgraded work iphone 4 , 4s's 960x640 display (nearly iphone apps nowadays), far, they've chosen not to. instead, ipad 1 , 2 continue pixel double 480x320 display original iphone's screen. in fact, there jailbreak app called retinapad enables use of iphone retina graphics on original ipad, filling gap in functionality.

new ipad, however, displays retina graphics of apps designed iphone in both 1x , 2x mode, resulting in improved visual experience, pointed out user on toucharcade forums. user experience issue still exists -- in 2x mode, interface elements twice large -- looks better .
