Finder Sidebar Preferences

when macintosh hd label disappeared desktop icon renamed it. when looked in finder sidebar preferences noticed hard disks box had horizontal line (- ) in rather checkmark. fool clicked on , checkmark appeared. click again box empty. click again, checkmark. how ( - ) there begin with. think when installed lion. know if problem or how fix it. above username imac , checked.
