Wi-Fi signal strenght

hi,
have trouble understanding why wi-fi signal not strong should. have airport express, not far imac (like 8-10 feet away). able check strength of signal istumbler , varies 47% 52%. channel set 1 (as opposed 6 neighbor network).

how can boost signal? why low? cannot find solution far, welcomed

how strong think "should" be? why matter if you're connecting , accessing want access?
