Audio stops working after...

audio stops working after disconnecting external audio card.
have usb audio card attached usb on desk, when dock laptop need plug in usb use speakers (instead of 3.5mm jack well). when plug in or unplug audio device, audio on mac stops working. cant change volume (just cross on icon), , if try open sound preferences, window crashes. itunes doesn't play (stops on 0:00).

resolve have restart.
problem doesn't occur every time.

 

what device it? check manual guidelines on hot plugging it. may frowned upon.
