Possible to create RAID setup using various external drives?

i've got number of external drives, each @ varying speeds , storage limits , curious whether can create raid setup if able pull each drive out of it's enclosure?

if possible great way add speed, convenience, , save desk space.

possible? if not, ideas might find "intro raid" guide started in right direction?

thanks!

no answer question.
hardware raid chassis , put drives in it. preferably same drives , drives supported chassis manufacturer.
if don't risk 2 issues : a. 1 or both drives falling out of array , being unusable. b. continual resynching of raid array. either 1 makes raid unusable.

see : http://pcguide.com/ref/hdd/perf/raid/index.htm guide.
