can't get mysql server working, help!

i installed mysql server-5.5.16-osx10.6-x86_64 on mac 10.6.8, earlier had installed xampp on machine have uninstalled it(deleted & ran few commands in terminal), when try start server preference pane doesn't start & not terminal also, show" not startup mysql sever, reason: error 255 or internal error"
every terminal commands responds if mysql isn't installed & all.
seems new mysql server settings clash somewhere old xampp files/preferences. don't know if xampp uninstalled or not
i'm not mysql geek, i'm new this! please me this!!
