Does mail update by itself? (sorry for the stupid question)

new mac user here. when boot macbook pro, mail refresh/notification happen or have open mail , leave open in background notified?

mail must running, doesn't have "open".

macs, open , running 2 different things. safari open when have window open, it's running after close window. have quit in order stop running.

therefore, if run mail , leave open or close it, will update itself. if quit it, stop updating itself. leave mail running in full screen in lion, gives own window.

finally, applications on os x can configured clicking it's name in menu bar when it's running , clicking preferences. can choose how mail updates via these settings.

here apps running in individual windows in mission control:

if prefer run apps without window open, confused running, right click dock , go dock preferences. check box @ bottom of window indicators:

finally, if want mail begin running upon login/startup, right-click it's icon in dock , choose options>open @ login
