An improved how-to guide on using QuasiDisk to tether

for iphone owners on carriers charge tethering (read: of, if not of u.s.) may have been quick enough buy quasidisk yesterday app store. achieving tethering functionality quasidisk isn't strait-forward , this guide posted youtube left few area's unclear. think it's more of proof-of-concept video actual tutorial. uploader spent lot of time showing ip address on phone same machine tethering to. appreciate this, 75 percent of video ip address checking , kind of breezing through details of how app function. guide clear details.

first , formost, this app not allow tether ipad iphone. far common question i've seen asked. it's largely irrelevant app has been pulled, think it's still worth mentioning.

second, sorry windows users, not know how tether pc.

ok, let's begin, shall we?

first thing you're going open quasidisk, tap wi-fi icon , server name of phone. seen here:

name of server "deano.local".

once have that, go computer want tether. open "system preferences" , go "network" create new location.

we're going create new location 2 reasons. first, enabling proxy settings on wifi connection can cause problems internet connection when it's not tethered iphone. second, it's inconvenient clicking these settings on , off. allow switch between , keep our tethering settings , regular connection settings separate.

once new location named (i cleverly named new location "tether") select wifi connection , click on "advanced" button. go "proxies" tab, seen below.

check off "web proxy (http)", "secure web proxy (https)", , "socks proxy". in each of these proxies, enter iphones server name, seen here "deano.local". "web proxy (http)" , "secure web proxy (https)" port 6666, seen in screen shot. "socks proxy" port should entered 5050.

click "ok" in proxy settings tab , click "apply" in network settings.

next, we're going create ad hoc network selecting "create network" "network name" drop down in network settings. name new network (seen "tether" here) , click ok.

if set correctly, should settings on machine you're tethering. next, go iphone's settings, tap "wi-fi" , tap "tether" (or whatever chose name network) connect network created.

then, open quasidisk, go wi-fi settings (if didn't close out if earlier, app may open wi-fi settings). make sure "anonymous login" switched "off" , switch "ftp server" "on". do not tap "done" button. wi-fi settings screen must left , quasidisk must left open tethering function work. don't put phone sleep, either.

allow moment things stuff , internet travel through air , such. @ point computer should have internet connection. can see visualization of network traffic using "activity monitor" program in os x.
