Why does my iPhone have to be at at least 50% to install a software update?

in opinion it's ridiculous how have have @ least 50% battery on iphone install software update. downloading ios 5.1 on iphone on wifi took 6 minutes, when update done phone dropped beneath 50% update got cancelled. why need more 50% battery life install update takes 6 minutes , drains battery no more 5%?! seems pointless rule, 50mb limit when downloading apps off wifi...

battery dying mid install brick device. apple doesn't know how fast wifi is. more of better safe sorry thing think.
