Gmail as Apple ID - cannot create new iCloud (.me) e-mail address

hi all,

have upgraded parents imac lion , have used gmail previously. know want them have .me address when try set in pref pane can create syncs ical, address book etc not mail.

entered each of parents apple ids (being gmail accounts) , got ical etc set sync. when being asked choose .me address add chosen name (and have distinct surname) nothing happens. not notice starting address taken.

gives? have change apple id .me address how can if cannot evens et up?

appreciate thoughts might have.
