System Preferences not working

hi everyone.
since yesterday imac 27 2.8 i7, won't open system preferences panel.
not menu neither application folder. day before did maintenance tech tool. maybe did wrong?!
searched on google , tried deleting files, nothing happened.
tried repair permission onyx, nothing.
tried start imac bootable hd , worked fine again. used disk utility repair disk seemed corrupt.
again cannot open system preferences when starting directly imac. thoughts?
imac runs snow leopard , superdrive keeps ejecting installation disc, works fine dvd??

understand pc problem, , hope short out quickly. have tried initial steps make computer preference working, , suggestions consult hardware make run conveniently. because changing in computer again , again might caused new issues.
