Internet based hardware test doesn't even start

i have restarted 2011 macbook pro, , held down d key instruction manual suggested. aht doesn't start, sits @ grey screen while, , apple shows , proceeds boot os normal.

mac doesn't come discs or anything, relies on internet recovery mac shipped lion.
