Kernel panics, disc errors, general bad times

lengthy post alert.

switched on pc mbp last fall because tired of instability of pcs , windows. bought 15” 2011 mbp, 2ghz, 4gb ram, 500gb hdd, lion 10.7.2. promptly upgraded ram 8gb. machine ran fine couple of months; pleased.

here highlights of troubles:

couple of weeks ago started getting occasional gray screen, need restart kernel panics. increased in frequency until couple of days ago when couldn’t reboot. when recovery partition , found “keys out of order error – rebuilding catalog b-tree, volume mac hd cannot repaired. crap.

called apple. fortunately (or not – we’ll part), have kept time machine backups on external hd. @ apple’s suggestion erased mac hd , restored system time machine. backed few weeks exclude few new programs little suspicious of. anyway – restore went fine, machine started booting again normally.

overnight, attempted create brand new time machine backup on external hd. awoke kernel panic/gray restart screen. restarted. tried verify discs – external tm disc gave invalid node structure/cannot repaired. mac hd gave invalid key length. able repair mac hd disc utility “volume appears ok” status.

@ point, became concerned external hard drive i’d been using time machine perhaps bad. bought external hd. formatted property , started creating yet tm backup. had 2 more kernel panics while trying create backup on new external.

called apple. reset pram. told might eliminate panics. continued trying create new backup image. panic. called apple. suggestion reinstall lion. not ready reinstall os yet. why bought apple in first place – stability. crap.

whole time, have been suspicious of chrome browser not playing nicely, did kill chrome , remove of pieces , parts system. after removing chrome, nuked new (2nd) external hd , started again make new backup in time machine. well, worked. created whole backup no kernel panics. system still , running.

– morning, again on whim, ran verify disc on new tm backup, , guess what? invalid node structure, needs repaired. , on mac hd – invalid key length, needs repaired. of course, now, know happen when try repair – disc utility won’t able fix external drive , become unusable again. , able repair mac hd , fine hour or two, next time try verify it, there error.

basically, have unstable system can’t seem backup time machine. i’m copying on actual data yet external disc save it. suppose next step reinstall lion. wanted opinion here first. bought mac away sort of crap, , i’ve wasted better part of 3 days on pc-like experience of instability.

 

seems more hardware problem. bad ram culprit.
