My mac does not recognize my external hard disk (while windows laptop does). !!!

i've mac powerbook g4 mac os x 10.5.8 , transcend 25m2 500 gb external hard disk . mac used show on desktop "time machine backups" not . have checked disk utility can't see . formatted fat32/exfat still not working . works friend's windows 7 laptop . please help.
