Asus Laptop running Wndows 7 - black screen, white cursor

i have asus laptop running windows 7. put on hibernate last night , when turned on today said there error turning off , wont boot @ all. when press power, black screen , white blinking underscore @ top left of screen.

googling has shown may hard drive failure i'm hoping that's not reason won't boot. can offer advice may wrong?
