"Command not found" with RVM, etc

hi all, first post hoping can me here. know way around computers, apparently not as thought.

upgraded 10.7.3 last night, , downloaded xcode well.

wanted pursue ruby/ror went aptana site , downloaded aptana studio website. downloaded git , installed it, , figured go. rvm install lays out pretty straightforward, or thought.

tried $ bash -s stable < <(curl -s https://raw.github.com/wayneeseguin/rvm/master/binscripts/rvm-installer) says "-bash: $: command not found"

did sudo command, , installed (i think, can't find anywhere). won't work other command. comes "command not found".

shows git located in usr/local, have idea problem may be, , can do? want started on learning ruby , not spending whole saturday figuring out error couldn't begin figure out on own.

many thanks!!

my first guess thinking dollar sign part of command. isn't, command propt there when start typing.

second part if things installed places not on $path (use `echo $path` this), default command line not search there them when trying interpret wrote. part of basic (but initally cryptic) useage of command line, , if serious working lower layers of macos x, should find book , familiar it.
