Why isn't iPhoto the default for opening photos?

this baffles me. if sends me photo in email, , want have iphoto import it, right click on photo , says "open with", , brings list of programs, firefox, realplayer, quicktime, preview, , bunch of others never shows iphoto. have click on "other" , go , find iphoto , select it. why not have iphoto default opening photo? when double click on photo, open in preview still isn't in iphoto library.

why this? want iphoto either default opening photo or @ minimum on list of "open with" programs. know how fix this?

using snow leopard.

most people don't want import picture iphoto, view it. can make iphoto default highlighting photo, pressing command-i, in open menu change iphoto, click change all.
