my mid 2010 27" imac i've had 1.5yrs started making grinding noise hd week ago. make grinding noise between 3 5 seconds while i'm browsing on internet many times in hour. it's grinding during other processes well. grinding causes onscreen action freeze or pause return normal when grinding stops.
i've read older threads grind , how people have changed hds rid or or not. i'm wondering if hd starting fail? aht checks out , smart status seems ok. didn't extended apple warranty have year of warranty through amex. trying figure out if of major concern.
have backed on time machine , manually backup on 2nd external 1 tb hd. suggestions appreciated. thanx

yes, description seems hdd starting die. s.m.a.r.t. never works , has never worded. idea when develeoped, many committiees involved , watered down it's effectiveness.
it's have backed up. have few options here.
1. can replaced hdd yourself. ifixit.com has awesome step step instructions, photos, on how that.
2. let extended warranty cover all.
3. if have access ibm pc, take hdd out , connect ibm , copy of spinrite www.grc.com , run that. it's hdd recovery , maintenance tool works great. use time , recovered voice logging server last week it. prolong and/or fix grinding noise.
