Migration problem with 2 Mac Mini's

i have older mac mini running 10.6.8 , have purchased new 2.7 i7
mac mini , wanted migrate old data new computer. unfortunately have 1 monitor impossible me see old 1 start in target mode while new 1 running.

last night hooked firewire connection between two. started new 1 , plugged keyboard old 1 , started holding t key. didn't recognize it. next plugged short ethernet cable of each , appeared able migration. ran night , morning said "under minute remaining". went on @ least 2 hours no avail ended quitting migration operation.

ideas how can migrate old new?
