MBP1,Boot failure?

hi guys, i've looked around looking community wife's mbp (1.1, 2.16ghz, 2gb ram, 100gb hdd) , looks perfect place. here what's going on:

batter kaput (not subject of post) , last 2 mins, mistakenly turned off "lite switch" outlet wife had laptop plugged into. when returned home turned on see this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v628/charmpeddler/fore%20sale/mbpbooterror.jpg

have tried few things friend suggested (conversation posted below) have come nothing @ all.

our biggest issue wife writes living (novels) , has not been diligent time machine backups. tells me last days worth of changes not "saved" in word... if not lack of saving progress ( after conformation here "just hdd") buy new hdd, install osx 10.6 , use current drive external pull needed files.

trial , error diagnostics tried:
"
far...
booting "cmd+v" or "shft+cmd+v" shows black screen same white txt. (there little more txt before, nothing after. unable type though courser shows (solid, not blinking).
booting "shft" shows no difference.

booted install disk , ran disk utility (verify disk showed clean) (ran verify repair twice) still unable boot. hopping might able run 1 last time machine backup live cd i'm not finding option, restore option.

unable fsck run within terminal. i've tried sudo, , other options, tried "fsck help" or "fsck ?" thinking not getting syntax correct, nothing happens.

if can't working again, i'm hopping it's "just" hdd , buy 120gb+ drive cheap , switch out hdd's , go. there in little info i've given says lucky have replace hdd?
"

, help.

is not correct place type of help?
