Help! I've cooked 4 DVD drives and now have 2 PSUs

hello,
got ideas whats going on? i'm stumped.

2008 8-core 2.8ghz mac pro

2 old drives died ages ago , have got round replacing them.

system seems run fine nothing in optical bays.

when connect optical drive molex+sata (or pata) in optical bay mac won't boot. , ot (over temperature) leds light on logic board (also ram leds lit simultaneously couple of times seem have stopped). shortly followed smell of burning plastic dvd drive.

thinking psu must on blink opened check damage on power rail effected. seemed fine (no popped capacitors etc).

bought new psu, arrived yesterday. doesn't same.

have reset pram , smc? it's makes more sense reset smc first pram.

resetting smc: take out power source. hold down power button more approx. 10 seconds. apple says 30 sec, experience don't think need much.

resetting pram: boot mac , hold down cmd(apple)+alt(option)+p+r. keep holding them until reboots.

mean not booting? black screen?

edit: picked part burning plastic smell. sounds nasty... drive new? possible had kind of power failure while installed?
