White Macbook mid-09 screen won't stay on

i turned on macbook other day , got usual white/grey screen before apple logo appeared screen turned off.

managed working several times since hooking external monitor , messing around detect displays , removing mini-dvi cable. use laptop laptop. macbook's monitor won't turn on, it's if computer in clamshell mode.

upon boot screen may or may not light , if it's on second. darkness. it's not brightness, screen isn't on.

can plug in external monitor , coax working , when disconnect , open , close macbook screen'll come on second! it's off again. it'll come on, again briefly, if have external monitor on mirror mode , adjust brightness there, otherwise it's no-go.

i'm thinking something's dead or close it. hope helpful lot here can tell me otherwise.

don't have applecare or either so, whoop-di-doo if broken!

edit:

i'm using computer right type external monitor, functioning other screen.

try pram reset @ bootup.
