like title says, have 2009 mac pro w/8x 2.26 xeon cores.
want upgrade ram 12gbs (it has stock 6gbs (6x 1gb)).
if remember correctly, better add these in sets of 3. if crucial 12gb kit (3x 4gb), split them up, or put 3 on same quad processor (essentially giving me 15gbs if leave both slot 4s empty)?
love replace 6 4gb chips isn't in cards right now.
advice helpful.
for best performance, apple recommends install equal-size dimms (all 1, 2, or 4 gb) filling slots in order listed here:
if have: 2 dimms - fill 1 , 2
if have: 3 dimms - fill 1, 2, , 3
if have: 4 dimms fill - 1, 2, , 5, 6
if have: 6 dimms fill - 1, 2, 3 , 5, 6, 7
if have: 8 dimms fill - 1, 2, 3, 4 , 5, 6, 7, 8
hope helps!
----------
also, if install ram , macpro realizes not installed optimally, program called memory slot utility open , walk through getting them installed in more optimal way.
----------
one more thing...
if want check out memory slot utility manually, can open here: /system/library/core services (just don't mess else in folder)
