"New" iPod nano connection issues

my 1st gen nano replaced under recall refurbed nano (the tiny square one). connects imac fine using old cable, when try connect dock used old nano, or ipod connector in car, message on nano screen dock or car connector "unrecognized device." doesn't charge , doesn't play either. did apple change connector?
