WD Elements won't reformat

i have wd elements 1.5 tb external hard drive. when tried drag , drop files onto got message said disk not modified.

tried reformatting disk utility, erase.

selected mac os extended format, , clicked erase.

message came said: "disk erase failed error: file system formatter failed."

disk icon disappeared desktop.

tried again using ms-dos (fat), , worked, , disk icon returned on desktop.

can drag files onto drive.

there reason can't use mac format? can go ahead , use ms-dos (fat) format? compatible osx?

 

you have format guid partition type. mbr partition type can't have hfs+ partition formatted disk utility.
