stuck on boot

my father decided force shutoff macbook while updating, , stuck booting up. tried using 'recovery hd' repair disk , permissions, still same issue. laptop screen broken , using external screen works, when trying boot safe mode nothing appears.

you left out details. version of os did have before update started? sounds had lion because mention 'recovery hd' , of course lion forum . have tried installing os x 'recovery hd'? believe default "archive , install" leave files there , reinstall os. more info available here , here , here.
