.m4v nightmare

please tell me not lost: have lots of ripped video files videos own, , used work fine (say 6 months ago). i've since gotten new mac mini, , somewhere along line of transferring video files new mac mini , deleting them off old macbook, have stopped working. handbrake doesn't recognize them (no valid source found), vlc doesn't recognize them, itunes doesn't recognize them, finder won't play them, quicktime won't play them, , i've tried downloading 3 different kinds of drm m4v converter programs, , none of recognize them. appreciated, took me hundreds of hours these movies digital format.
