Bought used MacBook

i bought used macbook. rebooted install disks (10.5.2). i'd move lion, 1st tried update latest snow leopard. clicked on apple icon > software update. gave me 4 packages update, including os x (10.5.8). clicked on install, etc. gave me error: "the update 'mac os x update combined' can't saved. not have appropriate access privileges. installer package has been moved trash. try again, open package finder."

1st, have 1 user account, , has admin privileges. more need?

2nd, trash empty. installer package wasn't there.

3rd, after os stuff sorted out, plan securely erase disk free space. there else should do? there information previous owner needs replaced?

 

if want upgrade snow leopard, have buy upgrade disc. there no need go 10.5.8 first.
