When is the usual update for macs?

i'm looking buy macbook air.
had macbook pro in 2010, sold , got mac mini.. want laptop again. mini great i'm using media player( connected main tv) not getting use actual computer that's reason selling.
fancy air change i've had mac pro.
if retina display laptops around corner i'll wait
ideas on next apple event laptops? ...do that? or iphone/ipad reveals?
