help needed with 3gs

hello all. found site because need iphone. working fine , when took out of pocket said "activation required". i've been messing since , no luck. itunes icon cable.

phone 3gs running ios5. sits @ itunes icon screen. i've had no luck recovering itunes. ends "unknown error 1".

if have ideas please let me know. jailbreak bricked state? need step step instructions i'm not familiar this. help.
