Time Capsule and Speedstream modem

having trouble replacing ae tc. has been suggested dsl speed stream modem offers ip's of 10.1.x.x , tc uses 136.356.xxx.
why seem not able pull out ae , replace tc. messages there errors; tc not have valid ip or no dns.
if problem tc i"ll move on other router replace ae.
insight appreciated.
