MBPS suddenly powered down HDD?

i've got 2011 15" mbps dual ssd/hdd setup. ssd in optibay. today, while working, heard unmistakeable sound of hdd powering down, guess resulted in unmounting because got "improper eject" warning. killed vm working in (it lives on hdd) and, make matters worse, when rebooted, preferences gone. dock defaulted, launchpad defaulted, system preferences reset, etc.

fortunately, image hdd nightly using ccc, , in process of restoring. if has seen happen before, let me know in case avoidable (in future) user error.
