Leopard disk0s2 I/O error (error replay from journal)

hi all,

mbp 2009 working fine until evening when wouldn't wake sleep ( had used 20 min prior , fine). hard-reset using power button , kept resetting continuously whith beach ball.

performed verbose boot , noticed had i/o error logged single mode , performed fsck -y repeatedly. each time comes "file system modified" never recovers on reboot. error saying has trouble replaying journal.

can try recover? need of files on hard drive, reformat not option.

there way disable journalling while still in boot?

in advance.
